So, this morning I pulled into the petrol station to fill up for fuel. Got out, tried to open the fuel cap, the lock is frozen solid!
Had to explain to my boss today that I'm unlikely to be in work tomorrow as I've got enough fuel to get me home and no more. Unless I can unfreeze the lock that is. It did make we wonder that this wouldn't happen on a German car and I wonder if Peugeot sold any of these cars in Sweden or Norway...
I'm quite happy not to be going to work tomorrow as it will make a nice long weekend, however I'll have some errands to run regardless, any suggestions on the best way to unfreeze the cap/lock without breaking my key in it (and not waiting until summer)

Hi
I had the same thing happen to me this morning, stuck at the garage only way was d-icer or warm water, mmm only time garage has no de-icer!!! So it was case of means and must so i breathed right down the lock hole about 10 times and it work!! but on the other hand got funny looks and mean at my age u can buy lock de-icer or always try the lock before u leave the house and anything is a hairdryer if yr at home...
Trouble with warm water is it doesn't stay warm, ie it will get in the lock and refreeze.. Hairdryer is good, so is a generator if your car is parked a distance from your house !!

I agree Col, but to get you out of trouble hot water is often more readily available than a hair dryer. Furthermore the key slot does have a cover which is designed to keep water out. I meant tip warm water over the cap, not in the slot.

If you can park the car somewhere safe enough to leave it with the cap off (block filler hole with plastic bag or rag) leave the cap on your central heating radiator overnight. This will dry the moisture out, Once dry, spray some "Fogging oil" into the slot for the key and put the key in & out and lock / unlock it a few times to spread the oil. This will stop the problem returning.
Fogging oil is a spray to protect the insides of outboard motors from damp / rust damage during storage as it dries to an oily / waxy film.
Ebay has a section and it has loads of other uses (damp proofing electrics etc:)
I use it all the time. Better than WD40 for damp proofing.

All sorted after about 60 seconds.
As I said earlier the car is on my drive way, I had enough petrol to get me home but not out again. I put the end of the key in boilding water fro the kettle for about 30 seconds, it was super hot after this, I then put the key in the lock and left it for about 30 seconds, took it out, repeated once more. Then slowly turned the barrel and it all worked normally. I then brought the whole fuel cap in the house (cleaned it a little) and then popped it on the radiator for an hour to give it a good dry. It's all fine now.
