Incorrect battery!

Post by Dav1ey »

Hi all, this is just really a bit of info for anyone having issues when starting your car.
I purchased my 55 plate 1.6 Auto Allure in Feb 2012 and ever since driving it off the forecourt I have always thought that the starter didn't quite sound right. However, I lived with it as I had not been in an auto CC before so just thought that was how it started. Anyway, as the months have gone by and I have not really driven many miles, weird noises and chimes started to happen intermittently and last week when at the garage checking my tyre pressures, the battery failed me. After managing to get a lovely guy to jump start me I had no issues for a few days and then the boings and beep beep beeps started again. So, I decided to replace the battery, went online, spoke to Peugeot and ended up buying a new battery online, half the price of Halfords I may add, Bosch S3 for £57 with next day delivery. So, I hadn't looked at the battery properly before replacing it, lifted the bonnet, removed the old "Red Power" :? and put it beside my new battery and the old one was half the size of the new one!!! I installed the new one in minutes, and the moment of truth... fired up like a beast! No boings, no beeps, perfect start. Since replacing, the steering seems lighter, it seems quicker, the roof seems to work a bit quicker, and even the optional sound system woofers sound more punchy and generally feels like a new car again, I AM SO HAPPY again!
I am posting this to hopefully help new owners who may have the same issue and I can only assume the person who owned the car stuck a cheapy battery in to get rid as I have been assured by the dealer I purchased off that they did not touch the battery.

This is something that's come up before. Owners had bought replacement batteries and found they had to pack them up to fit properly. Grandadmonkey had mentioned it in a post, so I was aware of it when my original battery started to die and bought a replacement from Peugeot for £51.77, have the receipt in front of me now.

Yeah, the old battery had not been "packed" in but there was a lot of room around it and the new Bosch fitted in perfectly snug. I am still amazed every time I start it lol.
Also, the ampage and power of the old battery were much lower than that of the new one.
Why did the person who put the old one on do it?!?! Naughty!
Got a picture actually, will try and upload!

I saw your post Thar, noticed was a while ago. I did speak to Peugeot direct and they wanted £108 with fitting as no offers on at the time and as there were good reviews on the Bosch was happy to go with it. :big-grin:

Should last for a few years so I am pleased with the price Thar and the next owner will have a good battery. We are looking at the new 308cc to replace with in the middle of next year :)

Lots of people go to Halfords only to find their "parts finder" cards are very, very inaccurate. Batteries are one of teh worst and I've got three cars where the cards are totally wrong: the two 206's and my Alfa 156.

I've had a few cars, and looked after a few more, and I'm surprised how poor the accuracy can be. And I don't find Halfords cheap either anymore.

I tend to trust my local motor factors when it comes to getting the right parts and often at a better price. I also use internet parts outlets where you can get some really good deals (and I don't mean just fleabay!)

GSF = German Swedish French

1977 - Stan West, founder and owner of GSF Car Parts started business in one half of a tumbledown shed in a corner of a Battersea salvage yard. He called his business VeeWee.

1981 - Wholesale suppliers Kontinental Auto Werke (KAW) buys VeeWee and Stan joins the Management team.

1987 - German and Swedish is established by Stan and his business partner, Maurice Forde.

2000 - The company acquires Andyspares, adding French car parts to the range and is renamed German Swedish and French.

2000 - GSF also acquires Autocavan and URO automotive.

2003 - Hans Motors joins GSF Car Parts and sells all makes parts to other factors.

2005 - GSF adds an all makes range of parts to its specialist inventory and becomes GSF Car Parts.
