"juddering" when pulling away and irregular "tick over"

It's the good stuff - The sound is pretty distinct, a metal on metal tapping/rattle.

I'll have another go at working it our before I hand it (and potentially a wad of cash) to a mechanic lol.

if its 2.0 gti like mine then will be manifold rattle, sooooooooo annoying and only way to fix is replace/weld but will only happen again in a few months time lol

Yep mine has this rattle, its thing that you get use to or change it!!
