New owner, 206 GTI - power problem?

Post by evertonmarc »

Hi guys,

Hope everyone is well.

The wife's just bought herself a 1999 Peugeot 206 GTI - Done i believe 99,000 miles. Has a full service history from what she's told me (only got it 2 nights ago - took her dad with her rather than me!).

Now, i took it out last night, and i'm pretty sure there's a problem. Of course, i'd just got out of my own car (Seat Leon Cupra Diesel) so i may have just been comparing.

It seems to idle a little low (looked to be around 600-700rpm - what should it be at ideally?).

Also, once it was warmed up, i put my foot down, and it didn't seem to have any oomph at all - at least not what i would expect from a GTI (i previously owned a 106 gti which seemed much more responsive).

Before i go drop it into a garage, is there anything we should be looking out for?

Cheers guys

Try the guys over at 206info.co.uk ...

But the engine is pretty much the same in the CC. I'd suggest the simple things like plugs (best ones are Bosch Super 4s), air filter, lambda/maf/map sensors, coil packs, etc ... it may need plugging into PP2000 (Planet Peugeot) diagnostics to really see what's wrong.

I know my daughter's 2.0i goes like the proverbial **** off a shovel ... :big-grin:

the cc came in a GTI version but only 138.

Mines the GTI 138 and sits around 1k on start up then falls to 600-800 after a few seconds

138 suffers from manifold rattle due to monkey metal being used, only fix is buy aftermarket or get it welded but wont guarantee that it wont happen again
