what keys should i have

Post by goodshipalbion »

Hi all just bought a 2002 2.0 and only got the 1 key...its big and has the central locking open and close buttons on the key itself (not a seperate fob)

should the car have another key at all...what problems am i likely to encounter with just the one...is there for example meant to be an ecu reset key like the red keys with fords and fiats?

any rcomendations for how to get another key made and / or get a special key if needed?

cheers
Josh

The most important thing is the key code card. Have you got that? Peugeots can make you a key from the code on the card.
Cheers Col.

All new cars would come with two keys ... you might get two with remotes or one remote and one fixed key with just the immobiliser.

Adding a 2nd key would need a key with a matching blade and an immobiliser chip plus a remote that matches the one you have .. and software to set it up. I've got as far as getting the blade and immobiliser, but it looks like the remote is a different one from the BSI unit. I think there are four different ones!

A dealer will provide a key, but expect it to be close to £150-200 if other manufacturers are anything to go by. And they will need the car and both keys to programme it in. Otherwise a useful site to find someone who might be able to help is www.peugeotforums.co.uk

Yes you should have 2 keys.

If you lose that one you're buggered!

It's no good just getting another blank cut to the same shape because the ECU, BSI and comms unit (which the indicator and wiper stalks attach to) are coded to one another. The car will not start without the transponder (which is in the keyfob) communicating with the comms unit. I guess the alarm probably has an immobiliser too, which must be deactivated by the RF transmitter chip in the keyfob.

You could take it to Peugeot to get a duplicate, but it won't be cheap. If you don't have the key code card that Capncol mentioned they will charge you £24 just for the codes which should be printed on it. For a replacement card it's £45+VAT. Then you've got another £100ish for a key including programming.

There is an alternative. If you go to peugeotforums.com, Bettyswollocks can provide you with the codes for a fiver. And if you can get a blank key with a "virginised" transponder and chip off eBay, then find someone nearby you with Peugeot Planet 2000, you should be able to get your blank programmed by them. I just bought a blank from the eBay seller "remotefobcentre" for £25. He just needed the part code off the circuit board inside the chip.

As well as peugeotforum, look for Lee on 206info.co.uk who can sort your transponder chip for you and it's not stupid money. Plus he'll supply the pin codes for the radio etc if you don't have them.

Then you can get a blank of ebay (there are two types) and take that to a security shop (Timpson's won't cut the blank unless they supply it!).

You can also then find someone with PP2000 locally who can program a 2nd key ...

well remotefobcentre on ebay can do my model remote key with blank blade and blank transponder for 27.00. bettyswollocks can get my code for 5.00. citronix (local french specialist) can program the blank key for 36.00 (is that a good price?) and then just need the blade cutting (sub 5.00) so i make that 73.00 which i think is pretty cheap...sound good to everyone else?

Doesn't sound bad (a lot better than first expected!), but I would still have a look at the Peugeot Planet map on peugeotforums.com to see if there is anyone nearby who could programme it cheaper. Having said that, at least Citronix should have done it plenty of times before so won't be practising with your blank!
