Hi all.
Bought a new key body. My old key's buttons were knackered - pushed through. So, this new key was simply two halfs, front and back. Front half has buttons, rear half has the Pug emblem. There were no insides nor was there a key blade. So all I had to do was transfer the circuit board and blade from my old key and put them inside the "shell" of the new key. There seems to be no electrical parts (Or even any metal) on or in any part of the plastic of the new key body. This means that all the stuff that interfaces with the cars electrics was being swapped from the old key body to the new one. In theory, surely this means that as far as the car is concerned there's been no change to the key.
So I swapped the circuit board and key blade from one shell to the other and guess what - the key won't start the car. It turns over, but won't start. I guess it's the immobiliser but I'm baffled. What could be in the old shell that's not in the new shell?
In the end I've got the key circuit board and blade in the front half of the new key (the half with the buttons) and the rear half of the old key (The half with the emblem).
I'm ok with the solution as its fixed the button problem but the key looks a bit crap as one half is new and one half is old. Any of you guys know what's going on?

just next to the blade in the old case you should find a small chip you need to put that in the new case as well as it is the transponder chip for the imobiliser

You can get the key code from the dealers but they aren't cheap ... or ...
.... you can try around the 206 user forums (google 206info) and get everything you need for a lot less including a new chip for the key. You will still have to program it to the BSI unit but even that isn't impossible for the right person with the right kit ...

Re: New key body - new and weird problem
Hi, congrats on the new car and welcome to the forum. You'll find many intelligent and knowledgable people here, all willing to help out. I'm not one of those people unfortunately, (well, apart from the helping out bit) but I've just had key issues and got it sorted with the help of the forum members.
If your current key works fine, (Starts it up, sets the alarm, locks the doors remotely, locks the doors and boot by turning the key and unlocks everything) then you just need a new key body - just the black plastic shell. You can get one from eBay for less than a fiver.
If there's a problem with the key function, it's a fair bit of trouble. The key is coded to the "Brain" of the car. The key and the car software are locked together if you like. If your key is damaged this key code allows technicians to reprogram a key to match your cars software. If you have no key code, well you don't want to go there....
Which one is it?

Re: New key body - new and weird problem
I recently had the same problem as 'Booster' with my key. The buttons were pushed in although they could still be got to function. I got a new casing on e-bay but when I fitted the old blade and circuit board. Nothing worked. I then noticed the tiny 'chip' in the old case and transfered it to the new. It still did not work. I noticed that with just the circuit board in my hand I could press the tiny buttons on the board and it worked. At first I thought that the buttons on the new case were not long enough to reach the switches on the board so I tried gluing a thin piece of plastic to them. Still no joy. I also noticed that there seems to be a delay when doing anything before the board alone would work.
I have returned to the old casing with D.I.Y. buttons fastened together with plastic tape. This works but looks a mess.
Has anyone any idea what I am doing wrong?

Re: New key body - new and weird problem
Hi and welcome.
The "new" cases are probably Chinese copies, so may not be molded as accurately as Pug original. Might be worth a call to Pug dealer to see how much a genuine one is?
