Grinding/whining Gearbox noise on acceleration/deceleration?

Post by daljames »

Hi all. Just bought a 206 cc 1.6 manual 2006 model. I have a grinding/whining noise on acceleration/deceleration. Sounds sort of like a 1930's supercharger type noise???

Any tips on where to start looking?

Also a bearing noise at front of engine (pulley area). Any bearings go here (alternator or water pump or idler pulley)?

Car done 76000kms.

Thanks to all! Love the friendliness of this forum! its like the old Range Rover forum rangerovers.net

I take it you mean while driving and not just revving up?
Sounds like gearbox problem. You could try draining a drop of oil from g/box and see if there is any swarf or silvery particles in it.

At front of engine you have Water pump/ aircon pump (if fitted)/ alternator/ belt tensioner/ cam belt guide and tensioner. Try running engine with alternator belt removed to see if noise goes. This will prove if noise is alternator belt related or cambelt related.
Cheers Col.

Thanks for that. The grinding/whining supercharger type noise is only when on the move, particularly speeding up or on trailing throttle.

The bearing noise is engine speed dependent.

In Australia cars less than 10 years old and less than 160k kms must have a 3 month warranty when bought from a dealer, so i have taken it back.

Will let you know how i go for future reference with it.
