Squealing and Smoking Clutch

Hi everyone. I have just joined the site but have used it many times to look up problems I have had in the past with my Peugeot 206 cc allure and it has been very helpful. Any probs I've had in the past have been minor and I love my car but unfortunately today I have had real problems so I have joined and would really appreciate some help. My car is a 2.0 litre and is 05 plate allure. Yesterday I heard a few scraping noises when I pressed the clutch. The clutch pedal itself felt like it was vibrating a bit too when I put my foot on it to press it. It only happened a few times but then seemed to stop so I just thought I would keep an eye on it. This morning it's completely worse. I set off on my journey of about ten miles and the clutch pedal was vibrating lots. Each time I pressed the clutch it scraped louder and louder and by the time I reached the car park at my destination the car was squeaking and squealing when I pressed it. I tried to find a spot quickly but the traffic was very busy and by the time I parked up the clutch was burning I think cos it smelt terrible and quite a bit of smoke was coming from the engine under the bonnet. I have had no signs of probs with the clutch before this- slipping etc as my partner experienced with his puma as the clutch was on it's way out. I drove it steadily home and used the clutch as least as poss but by the time i got back it was squeaking and whirring when the clutch wasnt engaged too! Please can anyone help me. You don't say how many miles the car has done, or what sort of life it has led, but it does sound as if the clutch is worn out. I'd start getting quotes for a brand new clutch complete with a new slave cylinder. If you drive it much as it is it'll eventually let you down.

I'd get quotes from

a) Peugeot main dealer

b) Local Peugeot independent specialist

c) Local " Mr Clutch"

You're probably looking at around £350'ish from a main dealer, £200-£250 from an indy, and Mr Clutch are usually competitive because clutches are their main business.

Hi, it's done 64000 miles and had one owner before me who looked after it very well and so have I. I do a lot of miles over short journeys through town and round housing estates as I am a mobile beautician and I fear this could have worn the clutch prematurely. Literally driving round all day 5-6 days a week. Is this poss?

The type of driving you do will obviously wear a clutch out quicker than someone doing mainly motorway miles, but hey, 64,000 miles is not bad at all, so don't run yourself down.

Three things on a car are by design going to wear out completely - tyres, brakes and clutches. We're still on the originals of all 3 at 25,000 miles and our car is 6 years old.

The other items that need regular replacement from time to time - oil, filters, spark plugs and belts - we can doing little about, except to ensure that they are renewed on a timely basis.

You (and the previous owner) should feel proud that your clutch has lasted so long with all that urban motoring.

Good luck with the quotes. Don't necessarily just go with the cheapest. You must feel confident that they will do a first class job for you.

Hi guys. Had my car fixed today. Feels great to drive now. I had a few quotes from £285 to over £400 but I didn't feel very happy with some of the cheaper ones as it seemed they just made the figure up there and then on the phone without actually checking what I needed or where they could get the parts from at the most competitive price. The garage I went to charged me £400 and they asked me everything. They said something about the engine size was important to what clutch was fitted, they asked about the slave cylinder and thrust bearing too (which is what I got told had broken on my car, as well as the external slave cylinder popping! I asked why that had happened and they said summat about pressure! Lol sorry don't really understand car stuff!)

Anyway I am happy and confident they did a good job. Full clutch supply and fit, thrust bearing and external slave cylinder all renewed! Thanks again for your help and I will definitely keep using this site.

Seen quite a few clutch covers where the release bearing has "cut through" the fingers of the diaphragm and the relase bearing has broken up.
Seems to be a traight with modern driving style. People sit at the lights with the clutch & brake peddles pressed down instead of shifting into neutral.

If more people understood how a clutch works they wouldn't do it. I always shift into neutral at traffic lights and let the clutch pedal up. Only takes a second to slip it back into 1st when the lights go green.
