new peugeot 206cc owner with battery or bsi prob...help pls!

Post by shebs309 »

Hi,

I bought a 206 cc and my first peugeot ever, its been a smooth drive and no problems for a week its a 206 cc 2002 plate with fsh and 70k on the clock, before this i had an alfa tiptronic and i needed to press the brakes when i started the ignition...being in this habit i had turned the ignition half way to let the computer etc set itself ( this is what the owner said to do to help keep the life of any car longer) i hadnt realised my brother left it in gear so as i mistaken had my foot on the brake and it was in reverse with the iginition half way and realised my bad mistake i took it off reverse and turned it back off

but as soon as i did this everything went dead :-( the needles went straight down the little light between the hazard light and interior lock started blinking and it was making a short beeping noise. When i went to start it again it kept clicking and the wipers were making very small struggling bursts and moving. It also makes short beeping noises and the key fob doesnt work had to manually lock my doors, the only time my key fob worked was when i disconnected one of the leads on the battery and it made a beep noise and my fob worked but only once when i tried unlocking it with the key fob it wouldnt work again :-(

I took one battery lead (the one with the latch off) for a few seconds and then put it back on and tried it, this made it lock and the mileage on my dashboard came back up, i thought i may have drained the battery from my mistake so i had a garage friend turn up to jump start it with some professional equipment and it started, left it running and stuff for some time but as soon as i turned it off and tried it again its happened again, this wasnt a reoccuring problem before.

Ive tried to research what it could be but some seem to claim its the battery and others say electircal faults like this could be the bsi. Now i am worried if i have caused a major issue with my car or if it just needs a battery recharge/new battery.

I am very new to all of these peugeot problems and would reeeeallllyyy appreciate good advice on what to do and what it could be. Very stressed that this might cost alot and i cant afford to splash out....please tell me its a battery problem and i havent short circuited something. The digital mileage on the dash board is still up.....please help!!!!!!!! and thank you in advance :-)

Hi shebs309,

I don't think what you did has caused this problem. It does sound like a classic case of an old battery to me. Strange things happen when your battery starts to die, believe me I've seen it too. I would price a replacement battery up at a Peugeot dealer, I found them to be very reasonable, ~£55, plus, if you buy from the dealer they will supply the correct (physical) size.

As Thar says, if the battery is 9 years old it is most probably at the end of its life.

When you get a new battery, as Thar says, get the one specific for the 206cc, they are taller than the ones for the hatchback. Buy the correct one.

Finally whenever you start the car, always have your clutch pedal down. Disengaging the clutch saves the battery and starter motor a lot of work and will help extend the life of those components.

Let us know how you get on.

My wife's uncle & aunt have an 04 206 1.6 SE 5dr H/B which does very little mileage, and most of those short runs. Uncle knows I know a little bit about cars. We visited them on Friday and he collared me.

Their car is looked after and has about 45k on the clock. It had a new battery less than 4 years ago. Anyway it was becoming hesitant on starting, the air-bag light was coming on from time to time, and the clock in the centre console kept resetting itself to zero. Could I help?

First I checked the battery terminals, connections, leads and earth leads - all seemed OK there. Must be the battery then I thought, but it is relatively young. Still, rang around and got quotes from car factors (AVP) and Wilco Carmaster. They wanted £65.94 and £63.99 respectively, then each would give a £5 refund if we took the old battery back to them.

I rang the Peugeot Broad Green main dealer in Wellingborough - St Johns Street, Wellingborough NN8 4LG. Shaun, their Parts Advisor was very helpful - yes, they had the correct battery in stock at £50.24 including VAT. (Please note - this is the battery for the hatchback, not for the taller 206cc battery). So we popped over in my wife's 206cc to pick one up. Within an hour we were back at uncle's home, the new battery fitted and his problem sorted.

I left uncle to reset his date and time - well he has to do something himself! He has had plenty of practice doing that recently.

I hope a new battery sorts your problem too Shebs - look forward to your update.
