manual transmission oil -topping up the oil

Post by pcdoctorsw »

Hi, I've got a 206cc 2.0 petrol, can anyone tell me how to check the manual transmission oil, and how to top it up if required. Cheers Gav

That link if for an auto box .. manual is different. If it's the standard MA5 box (manual, 5 speed), the drain and refill plugs should be on the end. Take the section of inner wing out on the passenger side and they should be visible. They are hex socket plugs, but I can't remember what the size is off the top of my head.

First loosen both the plugs, then tighten then back up but not too much.

Take the car for a run to warm up the oil which makes it flow easier.

Remove the drain plug and drain the old oil into a suitable container (washing up bowl is best, but don't expect to put it back in the spamspam!). Jacking up the drivers side slightly will make sure as much of the old oil is removed as possible.

Lower the car and replace the drain plug.

Now remove the upper filler plug and refill. It's jsut under two litres and you keep filling until the new oil comes back out. Make sure the container is left there as gearbox oil is smelly stuff!

Refit and tighten the filler plug and that's it.

One point: I have seen MA5 gearboxes with NO filler plug .. no idea how you do them!

I can answer that one, as mine is one of them, so all previous diagrams served only to confuse me (easily done)!
In the case of mine, the filler plug is under a black bung which lives next to the reverse light switch. In theory, because the gearbox takes exactly 2 litres, all you have to do is completely drain it, then bung 2 x litre cans in. There's no facility for level-checking though, so if you don't drain it completely, or spill a bit when filling (also easily done), then you may under or over-fill.
