Overheating - Fan doesnt spin

Post by dajamjar »

Hi all, hoping someone can help me track down the cause of an overheating issue i am having with my wife's 51 plate 1.6 206cc.

The car is warming up at a normal pace however the fan is not kicking in at any point in the cycle, so if left running it will go into the red and the 'STOP' light will illuminate.

Not had much time to look at it, but spent an hour on it today. The dealer had a green relay in stock so i have switched that out, the original was badly corroded, but this hasn't resolved.

Can anyone tell me how i disconnect the fan, i can see what i assume is the connector in the same place as the two relays but i couldn't disconnect and didn't want to force it.

If i can get the fan connected directly to the battery and it spins up, can anyone tell me how i trouble shoot the many other aspects, i assume the most likely are:
- black relay (going to order and replace anyway)
- resistor
- temperature sensor
- thermostat (if different from the radiator temperature sensor)

Any help much appreciated, havent had my head under the bonnet of the 206cc much.

Jamie.

In case someone else gets use of this:

Turns out the 3 pin black relay i was going to replace is actually a 5 pin relay with two contacts corroded off, not only was the pin corroded but about 10cm of the wire had to be trimmed to get back to good copper. Needless to say replacing this has resolved my issue and the fan now correctly kicks in at (what i assume to be) 100 degrees.

Well done. Corroding relay contacts seems to be a feature with Peugeots.

Thanks for feeding back the solution - I have to confess I had no real idea of what it could be.

Pretty glad its all up and running.

Meant to add, the lower of the two relays only uses 4 of the 5 relay pins, the centre pin does not have a corresponding wire.

The left and right pins take the thin wires, presumably they activate the relay, and the front/rear pins take the thick wires, presumably the actual power. Orange to the front, white to the rear, red to the left and i forget the colour of the right hand one.
