Hi all

we've (the wife and I) got a 2005 2.0l allure and so far so good no problems with it
however the gearchange seems quite sloppy, am i right in saying the linkage rods need replaced?

I did email a guy selling rods on ebay, but he told me my car was a cable change?? looked under the bonnet and it looks like rods to me:scratch:

is this a common problem? easily fixed?

:love-thx:

Welcome to the forum Phil.

Some people find the gearlever action sloppy compared to other cars. Bear this in mind first.

Your gearbox should have 3 link rods. If one or more of them is worn it could of course affect the action. Before assuming that they are worn you could remove them and examine them. If not worn you should relubricate them with the special grease - Esso Norva 275 grease - on reassembly.

If replacing the rods I would buy new ones. Otherwise you could just inherit someone else's problems.

Let us know what transpires please.

Hiya

thanks for the reply

When you say buy new ones, do you mean genuine replacements from peugeot?

Do they just pop off and on?

I do Phil, but I would check what condition yours are in before buying. If one has gone, it is unlikely that all 3 are in poor condition.
I had one break (the cupped end insert that is) many years ago on a 205. You simply use a flat-bladed screwdriver to lever the link rod off its balljoint on the transmission. I went to a scrap yard and obtained a replacement that looked as good as new for a couple of quid off a scrap 205 which had done a lot less miles. Filled the cups with molybdenum disulphide grease, fitted it, and it lasted the rest of the life of the car, which was ages. But the other rods on the car, which were in good condition, I just took off, lubricated and refitted. This took any roughness out of the gearchange action.
If you can find decent 2nd hand replacements then you could save yourself money, but I'd check on the cost of a new one first, it might not be too bad. In my opinion it is worth asking the question.

By the way, it might be worth obtaining Haynes Workshop Manual 4613 if you're going to do your own maintenance. I find it helpful, and it soon pays for itself in saved garage bills.
