My car waited until the forum was down to throw a wobbly

I'd had the lurgy for a few days and so hadn't been out in my car (think it was attention seeking!), I started it on Sunday and although it started okay, it was a bit lumpy. A few seconds later the engine diagnostics light started flashing. I used to have a 1.4LX with an air bag light that flashed occasionally so I left the car and came back later hoping it would have sorted itself out, it hadn't. I took it to the garage on Monday (by which time the light was on permanently), they plugged it up to the software but no fault was reported. They rang Peugeot technical who said the only thing they could think of was a known fault on smaller engined 206s (mine is a 2.0l) where the spark plugs throw up spikes when they're firing. They've ordered new parts to cure this problem, although they don't really know that's why the light was on!

Has anyone else had a similar problem?

I've just had an almost identical thing just happen.

Started the car this morning and it was a bit lumpy like one of the plugs wasn't firing and the Engine Diagnostics Warning Light was flashing, so I went out in the wife's car instead.
I tried it again when I came back and everything seems OK, the engine seems to be running smoothly but the Engine Diagnostics Warning Light is still flashing.
Typically, it's Sunday today, so no-one is around to look at it. From the above though it sounds like it's safe to take the kids to school before traipsing around the garage to get it sorted.

Does anyone have any ideas on this?

I had this.
The problem seemed to be (I dont know cars so dont know if its linked!) in the fact I had run out of oil. Popped to Halfords bought some top notch oil and the car is running like a dream again.

Having read the replies above I decided it seemed safe to drive the car, albeit somewhat carefully. After dropping the kids off at school on Monday I took it around the corner to the 'independent' garage there. They couldn't see any problem but said that either they could take it to their Peugeot specialist or I could take it to Peugeot proper.
Unlike these guys, whenever I've been to a Peugeot workshop they've always been too busy to even look at the car so I agreed to let my lot take it and to phone later in the day to arrange a time.

Driving into work, the light went out and has stayed out since, so instead I've put the car in with them for its 30,000 mile intermediate service a little early.

I've just spoken to my nearest Peugeot dealer & am not convinced they are telling me the whole story regarding the engine management system for the 1.4LX 206.

Wed 3rd March 04 the Engine diagnostics light came on in my 2 year old 206 1.4 LX, as I was doing 70 MPH on the M4 - the engine began to lose power & run lumpy. The vehicle is dealer serviced, had plenty of oil & a 1/2 full tank of fuel at the time. I limped into the nearest service station & turned the engine off whilst I checked the owners book for possible causes & solutions.

With no help from the owners book I restarted the engine - the light went out & the engine ran fine & continues to do so - so to my question.

Does the 206 engine management unit write the error condition away so the dealer can check it out even if the fault is no longer present ?

The Wokingham dealer says no - you can only drive it to the garage & effectively leave the engine running all night until they can see the car with that fault still showing & plug their kit in !

I also own a Triumph motorcycle & I KNOW that that engine management
writes the error condition away & stores it for later dealer diagnostics.

Is the 206 engine management system really as basic as the Wokingham dealer suggests ?

Yes it does. When I had problems with the faulty oil indicator, all errors (since last reset) were listed on my dealer's computer. However, sometimes an error is not recorded for unknown reason. (My car didn't start once and nothing was recorded).

I had the exact same problem with mine, in the end it was the Oxygen Sensor which had completely failed so causing the diagnostic light to come on and stay on permanently. At first it would go off after driving for a bit then it became full time!!

The engine management warning light has gone off 3 times on my 1.4lx 206! The first two times they said it was the ignition coil, so they replaced it and replaced 4 plugs. On the second visit they put a cap on to stop further happenings. But now, 7000 miles later it has gone off again, the light has flashed for the 3rd time. The light seems to appear on my car at intevals of every 7000 miles. This time the acceleration of the car was near enough non existant and was driving very sluggish. I took it to my local Peugeot dealer who ran the test, only for it to come back no fault recorded. They are now keeping it for 3days to see if they can get the light to come back on! When I spoke to one of the guys in the garage, he said if you turn the engine off, it resets or something, so the car would need to have the test run on it once the light comes back on. However, the first 2 times the light appeared, I took my car to the garage around a week later and they were still able to find a fault, so its beyond me why they cannot find a fault with the car, a day after the light appeared.

yep if the light has come on the ecu will deffo store a code, they also need to check the other side of the eprom that stores (p)codes or eobd as this can ghost store faults.
sounds like you have a coil pack fault or a injector winding starting to fail. :)

Ahh thanks for it, it might be helpful when I go to the garage tomorrow to hopefully collect my car. Just seems weird it would be the coil pack again when it was replaced at 26,000 miles and 33,000 miles, when they also capped something so the same fault would not re-occur.

Hi there,
I'm searching for answers and am hoping someone may be able to help....
Back in December my engine warning light came on so I took it along to Kwik Fit who found that it needed a new lamba sensor. This was replaced and all was well...until 2 weeks later when the warning light came on again. I took it back and they couldn't find any faults so they turned the light off and on I went. It came on AGAIN 3 days later so they recommended I take it to my local Peugeot dealer who could run a full diagnostics test. I did this and £50 later they suggested the Upstream Oxygen sensor be replaced and told me it would cost £303!!! What!!! I decided to get quotes from other garages and the most expensive was £110. The best quote was back at Kwik Fit with the total cost being £90, much better value. Dealers charge the earth!! This however is not my problem.....
My husband and I went out in my car this afternoon and after driving for 20 minutes, there was an almighty bang, the car shook, my steering went completely and the car was engulfed in smoke. We immediately got out the car to try and find out what had happened, it was gushing with oil and after walking back down the road we found 6 pieces of metal - each being at least 1 inch in size. The largest piece was over 2 inches in size and included a large bolt. Clearly something exploded. What would this be??
My question is - would there have been any indication that something was wrong on the diagnostics check that would have prevented this? Peugeot had my car for almost an hour and a half so surely this would have allowed plenty of time to complete a thorough check on the car?

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards
Shelley

The lights also come in handy. The lights are easy to navigate in the dark. This problem may be due to an error of lights.
