I fixed it!
I managed to get hold of a circuit diagram of the heater blower and its fairly elementary. All there is in that circuit is:
ignition switch
2 fuses
battery
motor
rheostat
& 4 position switch
(obviously wiring too).
Having wasted £18+VAT on a new rheostat that made no earthly difference what so ever I ruled that out!
The fuses had to be OK because the blower was working on 1.2. & 3.
Battery is OK too.
All wiring is common to the circuit except the hard wiring inside the facia control module so I knew that had to be OK too as it was working on 1, 2, & 3!
Motor was ok as it worked on first three positions with no faults.
That just left the switch in the facia control module. So I removed the control panel/module. Then I dismantled it on my test bench (as I repair PC hardware for a living) and it turns out that the switch is not a stand alone item but integral to the control panel housing i.e. the switch does not have its own casing inside the control panel and the terminals for the plug are hard wired to the 4 switch positions on a small simple circuit board.
So I tested for continuity on the 4 switch positions and guess what(?) no current at position 4. So I dismantled the switch and realised that the electric contacts were all soiled in debris from the motion of the switch contact surfaces constantly moving 'to and fro' and rubbing against each other over the years. So I got some alcohol based contact cleaner and removed the crud from all surfaces. When I reassembled the control panel it was fine, including position 4 of 'the god damn fan'. Then reassembled the centre console.
Hope this helps someone else to save a lot of money?
Cheers!
