REMOVAL - REFITTING DRIVE SHAFTS

1 - REMOVAL

WARNING : the AL4 automatic gearbox is sealed for life; there is no need to drain the gearbox for this operation .

Use a wheel free lift, To make the operation easier .

AL4 AUTOMATIC GEARBOX

POSITION THE SPRING RETAINING RODS [1] .

ALL MODELS

Remove the wheels .

AL4 AUTOMATIC GEARBOX

USE TOOL [26] TO PREVENT THE HUB FROM TURNING .

Remove the nut (1) .

Raise the vehicle .

ALL MODELS

Right hand drive shaft :

• slacken the nuts (4) (fully)

Turn the fasteners a quarter turn .

AL4 AUTOMATIC GEARBOX

Remove the bolt (3) .

Detach the swivel ball joint (USING THE TOOL [28]) .

Place a nut or a pin at (A) to immobilise the lower wishbone in a low position .

Right hand drive shaft :

• turn the steering to full right lock

Left hand drive shaft :

• turn the steering to full left lock

AL4 AUTOMATIC GEARBOX

Detach the drive shaft from the hub .

Remove the drive shaft .

2 - REFITTING

Check :

• there is no clearance in the joints (6)
• the condition of the gaiters (7)
• the bearing roller (8)

Rectify If necessary (Consult the brochure : "Drive shafts overhaul" ; Unit overhaul binder) .

Clean and coat with multi-purpose grease the splines of the hub and of the driveshaft on the wheel side as well as the splines of the sun gears of the differential and of the final drive end driveshafts .

Right hand drive shaft :

• clean and coat with multi-purpose grease the outer bush of the bearing roller (8) and its housing in the right-hand lower engine mounting

When refitting the right hand drive shaft, check :

• the presence and condition of the O-ring (9)
• THE PIVOT BALL JOINT USING TOOL [27]
• the presence of the dust cap (10)

3 - TIGHTENING TORQUE(S)

AL4 AUTOMATIC GEARBOX

Drive shaft bearing nut : 1 da.Nm .

Drive shaft nut : 24,5 da.Nm .

Wheel bolts : 8,5 da.Nm .

The pivot ball joint nut to 4,5 da.Nm .
