I was wondering if anyone experiences this 'problem', well it isn't really a problem. When I have about 2500rpm on my 206, the engine produces a 'humming' sound which is loud, it is not really a problem but when you listen to it, it gets annoying.

Do you experience this humming sound and at which rpm rate?

By the way, outside the 2500rpm rate, the engine sounds nice, no humming and fairly quiet :-)

I'm beginning to get this problem myself between 2500 and 3000 revs. I beleive it's a well documented problem here on this site. I'm going to take it in to get checked but it sounds like a cracked exhaust manifold cuase I'm getting a loss of power as well. Recommend you go and do this too.

The symptoms you suggest usually relate to one of 2 known problems with the GTi engine:

Cracked exhaust manifold - replacement required

Plastic engine cover rattling - can be fixed by padding

Had both problems with mine but they have now been fixed.

erwin,

i seem to experience the same as you. the problem occurs when accelerating rapidly in all gears.

the sound could be plastic engine cover ratteling as suggested by nx.

i would describe the sound as resonance...

You probably want to check out the thread in Other Problems, entitled Exhaust Manifold - appears that it may be possible to re weld it rather than replace it - which, if it works, at least saves the time waiting for parts. :?

It sounds like humming to me, like a box full of bees 'singing' at the same time. This afternoon I have an appointment with my dealer, I will tell him about this humming.

Is it strange that it happens at exactly 2500rpm? At ohther rpm rates I hear nothing ??!??

What about 5000rpm? Or 1250rpm? If it's resonance, you should get at least some noise...

Noi, it is exactly at 2500rpm, at most I drove max. 4000rpm the last days. It is in each gear at exactly 2500 rpm, 2400 = nothing 2600=nothing.

Well quite. If it's resonance, I wouldn't expect anything at 2400 or 2600. If you haven't gone over 4000 then you can't comment on 5000. It may be interesting to know what happens at 1250 though. There may not be a loud noise, but there may be vibration if you look under the bonnet.

Took my car tp the dealer yesterday for my roof leakage problem. They say the sound is normal, because each engine has een critical point where it makes more noise than in other rpm's.

Ok, sounds logical but 2 more questions:
1) some say that there is more dan normal smoke from my exhaust (I don't see this)

2) the exhaust pipe makes a noise which in a other car I would say the exhaust is broken. But, it is not loud so it could be just a feature of the exhaust. Remember, this is my first car with such a strong engine (2.0).

Can someone explain me what I can expect?

Erwin - if the problem is annoying then I would insist the dealer looks into it more.

I had the same problem at exactly 2,700 revs. The problem was caused by the silver coloured plastic engine cover which was vibrating loudly. The dealer put some foam padding under the cover and the vibration noises stopped. The dealer knew exactly what the problem was as soon as I explained it only happened around 2,700 revs because he had seen it before on normal 206GTis (with the same engine). If you wanted to check it out yourself, open the bonnet and get someone to set the revs to 2,500 and see if you can tell what is vibrating/causing the noise.

Keep your hands out there though and make sure it is not in gear or it will be you that is vibrating under the car

NX thanks for the advice. I will test it myself this weekend with my brother. I will also see if I can find this little magic device the 'exhaust manifold'. When I release my gear, my car pulls a little more like I'm giving a little gas while I press the gearpedal.

I talked to the dealer about this, so they will look at it tuesday, they will hook it up to the computer.

It's not really a magic device. It's simply the connection between the cylinder head and your exhaust pipe.

"Manifold" simply means "A pipe or chamber having multiple apertures for making connections"
In the case of a 4 cylinder engine, it's a chamber that converts 4 apertures (holes from each cylinder) into 1 (hole for exhaust pipe).
