Although I don't see why you should have to tell your insurer. It's not a modification to the car. After all, you don't have to tell your insurer every time you change the oil, or even if you use Super unleaded instead of normal unleaded.

I agree, it shoudn't really matter. My insurer (elephant) sent a list of modifications etc. through that included a question abour a replacement air filter. Declared it and it didn't affect my premium.
The way I see it Insurers are a bunch of bastards and if they can find a way out of paying up they will; bearing in mind we're talking out of pocket by 15k if the worst happens there appears to be no point trying to scam them.
