Drive shaft removal.
Drive shaft removal.
Hi all,
Finally getting sick of the rumble between 15 & 25 mph so guessing with the feel on the shaft it's the inner cv joint on the nearside..
Difficult job? also going to change both wishbones..
John

Re: Drive shaft removal.
Hardest part will be removing old hub nut and replacing and re-torquing new one as they are TIGHT!
Getting the ball joint back into the hub assembly can be a pita but I found a length of 4x2 was useful to push down on the arm as you moved the hole in the hub over the ball joint pin. Sometimes two sets of hands are better than one.
Get the proper CC/GTI wishbones as the standard ones have bushes made of cheese .. our 2.0 used to eat them for breakfast.

Don't forget to drain gearbox oil first.

Re: Drive shaft removal.
Thanks' lads....
Worried now that it might not be the nearside drive shaft inner cv joint?? Would that be a good sign of it being a noise like you've a stone in the tread between 10 - 20 mph? Or could it be the gearbox differential??
OR WORSE????

Re: Drive shaft removal.
Could be a chipped tooth in gearbox, or CV or wheel brg. Could even be a faulty tyre - that's easy to check by swapping one from the back
Cheers Col.

Re: Drive shaft removal.
Changed wheels so can't be that.... Could it it be bearing??? That wheel has got movement from side to side...
Could that be bearing or track rod end?
Could that be bearing or track rod end?
Re: Drive shaft removal.
9 oclock to 3 oclock could be either. 12 to 6 movement likely to be bearing but could also be the lower ball joint. You need someone to watch or pull while you watch closely.

Re: Drive shaft removal.
They all come with balljoints ... they aren't separately available. If they come out, you are up the creek ...

I think service box lists the dealer level service procedures too albeit you have to pay for them, if memory serves.
