Check all breather pipes, particularly any from the crankcase, and ensure they are all clear. Wipe the air cleaner body clean of oil and fit your new air filter.

If you have any wear in your bores and piston rings, any blow by will pressurise the crankcase and the breather pipe to the air filter casing will carry any fumes up to there to be burnt off by recycling them on the induction cycle.

It is normal to get some traces of oil in the air filter housing, particularly with worn engines. Ensure that you change your oil and oil filter regularly, at least once a year or every 10,000 miles, whichever comes soonest.

To clean breather pipes you pull a clean rag through them, rather like cleaning a gun barrel. Obviously you would have to detach the pipes from the engine first. Only do this if you are convinced that they are blocked (oily smells while driving along).

The important thing is to keep the car serviced regularly. Frequent oil and filter changes reduce engine wear and keep the build up of sludge to a minimum. Use the correct grade of oil. And wipe out the air filter housing before fitting the new air filter.
