1.6 16V cambelt / timing belt guide
Re: 1.6 16V cambelt / timing belt guide
Great thread......... wouldn't have the balls to do it tho,...
Re: 1.6 16V cambelt / timing belt guide
Car is 05 with 99k on the clock so just had it changed at local garage... New belt, new water pump and auxiliary belt and a coolant top-up.. £230.00
Good price??
Good price??
Re: 1.6 16V cambelt / timing belt guide
Most seem to pay anything up to £450, so yes - good price.

Re: 1.6 16V cambelt / timing belt guide
This is a brilliant guide - what can I use to lock the crankshaft/flywheel? Would a long 6mm allen key work? Perhaps a 12cm one?
Re: 1.6 16V cambelt / timing belt guide
Bolt/ Drill bit/ Allen key. Whatever you have that fits.
Cheers Col.

Re: 1.6 16V cambelt / timing belt guide
I bought a selection of allen headed bolts of various sizes and lengths from a guy who breaks 'bikes .. worked for me when I did the 2.0. That's one engine I will be glad not to have to do again .. still got the scars! :-)

Re: 1.6 16V cambelt / timing belt guide
Just wondering and probably stating the obvious but I assume number 1 plug is the one nearest to timing belt.

Other end.
Re: 1.6 16V cambelt / timing belt guide
Hi Capncol,
Your thread was what I'm looking for.
Just a simple question; If the cam belt is already ruined (I'd have to probably replace some valves too), which means that the timing has gone all haywire. All I have to do to set the timing back is align the cam sprockets with the holes, put 8mm bolts to lock them, align the crank pulley notch, as shown in your pics (tipexed), pointing toward the floor, and put the new belt?

Re: 1.6 16V cambelt / timing belt guide
Yes that's it.
As you have broken your belt, you will need to replace a few valves.
When you put the head back on, time the cams with the pistons halfway down the bore with the pistons either end (1+4) starting to travel upwards.
That way, when the cams are timed, you bring the pistons up towards the head until the mark lines up. If you put the head on with any pistons at TDC (fully up) you risk bending the valves if you turned the cams

Re: 1.6 16V cambelt / timing belt guide
Great thread, will be using it soon to attempt a cambelt and water pump change on a recently acquired 2002, 2.0L engined 206cc.
Is there anything that I should know / do differently with the 2 litre engine?
Cheers!

Re: 1.6 16V cambelt / timing belt guide
Anything different with the 2 litre than the 1.6 detailed in the thread?gazza82 wrote:I bought a selection of allen headed bolts of various sizes and lengths from a guy who breaks 'bikes .. worked for me when I did the 2.0. Re: 1.6 16V cambelt / timing belt guide
It's a different engine so probably. It's about 8 years since I did a 2.0 belt and never touched a 1.6
I definitely did not need or used Tippex either.
