Engine 2L S16 question.

Post by Spitfire6 »

Hi,
engine around 120k miles now.
It does consume more than I would like for a good engine.
I'm going to run a compression check on all cylinders hot on Thursday prior to fitment of 4 new Bosch FR78NX's. Seems a waste on a wasted-spark engine & would normally go for NGK R's. Peugeot & forums say use them, so arriving from eBay on Thursday.

Have noticed a very minor misfire at idle, once. Dunked a bottle of cheap white spirt in the tank & a bottle of non-distilled ethanol in to remove any water that might be present in the fuel. No harm; the chemicals were cheap.

It's leaking around the engine somewhere, but need to pressure wash and then talc it I guess? The PCV and pipes could be original; is it just the plastic pipe on the top I need to clean/replace?

Where & what size thread to fit a tempory calibrated pressure gauge to note oil pressure @ 4K to determine if my crank bearings are OK. What oil pressure is OK?

Handbrake needs a little force to fully apply but as 90& of road users don't bother with it anyhow, I might just join them.

Cheers,
Iain.

NGK R plugs have been known to be more of a problem as they clash with the coil pack .. but only certain makes. I just fitted the Super 8s and the engine felt much more responsive ... but then the plugs in the car were old, worn and had Peugeot logos on them so who knows how old they were.

Handbrake is probably the calipers seizing .. remember they are going to test this at MOT time and you don't want a "handbrake under efficiency fail" .. PS Ours was never good either .. new pads and discs didn't really help .. but I did replace the two cables as one snapped trying to apply the handbrake on a hill.

Not sure about the other issues .. take it you are referring to oil use .. 120k is possibly ring or bore wear and even a tiny scratch can make a big different as I found on my Alfa 156 TS engine .. that had to be there during the original build! Having the bores honed and new rings dropped it to almost nil consumption.

Hi,
plugs arrived today. Made in Russia.
If it stops raining tomorrow I will inspect present plugs & run compression test with 3 compression testers that I have. Not going to bother with leak down test as I cannot even see the crank pulley to check!
If it's more than 175PSI I will be content. More than 185 & within 20PSI I will be happy.
I will go down the thicker than xW40 oil route if compression is less than 175 PSI as long as oil pressure is good hot. I really do not want to drop the sump & everything else.
Cheers,
Iain.

Hi,
Tested on Hot engine. Forgot to use WOT as pressure was fine.
No.4 higher than the rest.
I am happy with the test & satisfied rings are fine.

Hi,
Plugs are about 4+ years old. Changed to new Russian ones.
1,2 & 3 look old but fine.
No.4 is damaged and appears oil-wet.
There is a small chance it picked up virgin oil when I removed it. Unlikely though.
So I have oil getting into #4. I don't think thru the rings. Inlet valve seal?

Hi,
is this the engine breather hose?
Where is the PCV unit?
