Rear lamp cluster bulb holder cluster?

Post by Spitfire6 »

Hi,
Greetings to fellow top-down and burnt people from a week ago.

Will the rear stop and tail light bulb holder fit into the reverse light socket? I.E; can I fit a dual filament bulb in the reverse lens aperture after changing the bulb holder?

The question is asked, so I do not have to remove the rear cluster to check as I am lazy.

I have a cunning plan to add extra brake lights & fog lights. All is failed if I cannot fit a dual filament holder into the rear reverse lamp socket.

Thanks in advance,
Iain.

Hi,
It appears that there are no single holders as such and it is a complete rear assembly?
If this is the case; then removal of the centre connector and two wires soldered to the bulb will be required?

Cheers,
Iain.

It's made up of formed plastic and metal strips providing the power to the bulbs.

Hi Gazza,
I will remove housing and solder a couple of wires (add a few diodes) then make my:
five brake light mod with three fog lamps and keep the existing twin reverse lights.

Once the bulbs are back in stock.

Be right back when done.
Cheers,
Iain.

You will fall foul of the law and MOT doing that

Hi,
firstly I have discovered that my aftermarket rear lights have bulb holders. So the only option would be soldering of light and mod of socket. Big no return mod.

The bulbs/LED's in question are dual " 21-watt" brightness red/white units drawing 400mA on each "colour".

I would like clarification on the reversing lights becoming red on brake application, as I would hate to fall foul of the law.

I have run fog lamps as extra brake lights, dual not single as abandoned on an earlier post with no problems.

Unfortunately, I see no problems with adding 2 extra brake lights & two extra fog lights. Please explain.

Thanks,
Iain.

For a start you need a min 4" separation between brake and fog lights. You won't achieve this in a std tail light. You fall foul of C&U
Reversing lights are now part of MOT and the red brake light will interfere with the white reverse light when they are both on.

From the testers manual:-
4.3 Stop lamps
4.3.1 Presence, condition and operation

You must inspect all stop lamps fitted.

Stop lamps must show a steady red light.
Additional stop lamps, over and above the obligatory requirements, must be tested. However, if you aren't sure that they're connected, you should give the benefit of the doubt.
Defect Category

A stop lamp:

emitted colour, position or intensity not in accordance with the requirements

Minor

showing white light to the rear or significantly reduced light intensity

Major [/qoute]
The function of a fog lamp mustn't be adversely affected by the operation of any other lamp.
Reversing lamps must show a white light to the rear. On some vehicles it may be necessary to have the engine running before the reversing lamps will work.

One or two reversing lamps may be fitted, but they must all work.

Buses over 6m long may have 4 reversing lamps which may be:

all showing white light to the rear
2 showing white light to the rear and 1 on each side

Defect Category

Reversing lamp emitted colour, position or intensity not in accordance with the requirements

Major

From C&U:-
SCHEDULE 11
PART IRequirements relating to obligatory rear fog lamps and to optional rear fog lamps to the extent specified in part ii

1. Number:
One

2. Position–

(a) Longitudinal:
At or near the rear of the vehicle

(b) Lateral–

(i)Where one rear fog lamp is fitted:
On the centre-line or off side of the vehicle (disregarding any sidecar forming part of a motor bicycle combination)

(ii)Where two lamps are fitted:
No requirement

(c) Vertical–

(i)Maximum height above the ground–

(A)Any vehicle not covered by sub-paragraph (B):
1000 mm

(B)An agricultural vehicle, engineering plant and a motor tractor:
2100 mm

(ii)Minimum height above the ground:
250 mm

(d) Minimum separation distance between a rear fog lamp and a stop lamp–

(i)In the case of a rear fog lamp which does not share a common lamp body with a stop lamp:
A distance of 100 mm between the light-emitting surfaces of the lamps when viewed in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle

(ii)In the case of a rear fog lamp which shares a common lamp body with a stop lamp:
100 mm

3. Angles of visibility–

(a) Horizontal:
25° inwards and outwards. However, where two rear fog lamps are fitted it shall suffice if throughout the sector so defined at least one lamp (but not necessarily the same lamp) is visible

(b) Vertical:
5° above and below the horizontal

4. Alignment:
To the rear

5. Markings:
An approval mark

6. Size of illuminated area:
No requirement

7. Colour:
Red

8. Wattage:
No requirement

9. Intensity:
No requirement

10. Electrical connections:
No rear fog lamp shall be fitted to any vehicle so that it can be illuminated by the application of any braking system on the vehicle

11. Tell-tale:
A circuit-closed tell-tale shall be fitted
Cheers Col.

Why not fit the later phase 2 lamp units that are clearer and brighter?

Reversing lights are now part of MOT and the red brake light will interfere with the white reverse light when they are both on. No problem here; White light powered prevents second “filament” red from illuminating

Brake lights are red with and without the red coloured lens. Of course redder then incandescent bulbs.
Fog lights are red.
Reverse lights are ~5000K white. More white than incandescent bulbs that are really yellow.
New brake and fog lights are less than 1000mm from the ground.

10. Electrical connections:
No rear fog lamp shall be fitted to any vehicle so that it can be illuminated by the application of any braking system on the vehicle.

So, the above stops me using the secondary brake lights as fog lights. No major loss here as I don't live near Scotland.

Hi,
Many thanks for the time in posting regs pertinent to my question.

Bulbs now back in stock and ordered today. Main purchase was for Spit, where they will be used as reverse &=and or fog lights with a suitable illuminated switch per new regs; where they will not work as fog again until switch cycled after the engine has stopped.

Red and yellow are also available; Make the whole cluster red on brakes! LOL.

Will post when fitted.
Cheers,
Iain.
