Hi all
Couple of days ago my 2002 plate wouldn't start. Found out the pipe that goes to fuel filter had come off. Easy fix just clicked back into place. This is where the problem starts, since then the car starts first time from cold but from hot or within an hour of turning off it turns over but won't fire up. Any suggestions

Re: Problem starting
You haven't said which engine you have (there are four possibilities).
My first stab would be the inlet air temperature sensor or the coolant temperature sensor.

Re: Problem starting
Hi it's 2.0 L
Could changing the petrol pump have caused this or is it coincidence?

Re: Problem starting
I can't see a connection between the pump and the engine temperature.JILLYPIPS wrote:Hi it's 2.0 L

Re: Problem starting
Hi Ian
Where would I find the air intake sensor?

Re: Problem starting
I'm not familiar with this engine, but I think Item 7 is the coolant temp. sensor, Item 12 is the inlet air temp. sensor, and Item 10 is the air pressure sensor. EDIT - corrected in next-but-one post.
If you want to know which part numbers apply to your engine (Items 7 and 12), post the last eight digits of your VIN, and I should be able to tell you.

Re: Problem starting
Thank you will have a look
Re: Problem starting
I've done some research, and Item 7 is the Coolant Temperature sensor, Item 8 is the Manifold Pressure Sensor, Item 10 is the Camshaft Position Sensor and Item 12 is the Inlet Air Temperature Sensor.
It is possible that any of these is defective and supplying inaccurate data when hot. I would suggest trying in this order: 10, 8, 12, 7.

Re: Problem starting
Crank position sensor can cause hot start issues without throwing up a fault

Re: Problem starting
Hi
Another thing is the starter motor clicking when hot?
Only if the starter motor clicks when trying to start , and when cools down it starts then its because the starter is on its way out.
When you are starting the car and say your waiting to get up to temperature there is no air circulation around the starter motor the coil windings break down. so when the coil cools down the ohms can travel to the solenoid..
This Happened to me..

Re: Problem starting
I think you mean current can flow. i.e. amps.steve747 wrote:... so when the coil cools down the ohms can travel to the solenoid..
Anyway, Jilly says "it turns over but won't fire up", so it's not that.
Re: Problem starting
Hi all thanks for your response
Looks like I'll be working my way through sensors
Will update when sorted

Re: Problem starting
Quick update
We changed the crank position sensor as this seemed to be the most logical place to start. It solved the cutting out when idling problem but not the lack of starting when hot
Turns out the new fuel pump was faulty so replaced it and touch wood we're all good
Thank you again for all advice

Re: Problem starting
That is quite a surprise. Why a defective fuel pump would allow starting when cold, but prevent it when hot is beyond my ken.
The engine needs a richer mixture, i.e. more fuel, when cold......
