New 206cc owner and loving it

Post by GazWaz »

Good Thursday morning all,

Last Saturday me and the Mrs set off in pursuit of a 206cc. We’d looked at one the weekend before which seemed really promising until we saw it in the flesh and turned out to be a shed.

We had one to view in Barnsley which was about an hour and half drive away from Barnoldswick where we live. It was a an 04 with only 45k registered mileage that all seemed coati.

It was a little bit scabby on parts of the body work but nothing I couldn’t get sorted. The engine was clean and pulled well. Everything worked. We agreed a price, I was about to hand over £1200. I asked the guy to put the roof back up because the weather was looking a bit ‘british’. He went to start the car and…. Click……Click…. Nothing at all apart from this click.

I ride a motorbike and do all my own maintenance so I instantly thought, lose earth on battery or starter motor. Needless to say, we walked away with a lucky escape. I got a call from him an hour later to say it was the starter motor and that he’d now got it fixed with a new one.

We were already on our way to Dewsbury to look at another one. 55 plate in blue. 1.6 petrol sport with partial service history. Guy had it up for £1500. The car was REALLY clean inside and out. And everything worked as it should. We ended up paying £1300 for it and drove it home.

The main reason we bought the car was because the wifes leased Peugeot 2008 was gaining too many miles for our agreement. We have a Fiat stilo on the drive but the Mrs hates the car with a passion so that only got used in winter by me when the bike was a no go. The Stilo is going and being replace by our lovely 206cc.

We’ve only had it week but since then, the mrs hasn’t had a look in. My bikes been in the garage all week and I’ve been using the 206. Absolutely love it. Granted, it’s got no guts when you put your foot down but if I want speed I ride my bike. Roof is down at any opportunity and it’s a peach to drive. I’ve had some stick at work for driving a hairdressers car and that it’s gay but hey, whatever. Loving it.

Only thing I think I need to do is get the cambelt/waterpump done. Although it’s only got 50k on the clock it’s still 14 years old. Is there anyway you can tell if it’s already been done? The engine bay is spotless so it’s probably been steamed but the car has obviously been looked after.

Wow… just read this back. Sorry for the long post.. Mrs says I go on sometimes..

Cheers all

Gaz

A very quick way and for reference only - remove top cambelt cover and turn engine over by hand and see if there is any printing on the smooth face of the belt but also look at the cambelt pulley and back plate for signs of paint timing marks put there by a previous owner.
Belt replacement intervals approx. 60 - 70K or 10 years.
This is for reference only but at 50K and the age put a belt kit & water pump on then you know its good for another 50 - 70K

if in doubt change both...bought 06 plate with only 43k on clock...mint interior and exterior...cost 1400.00...did the above quick check and belt looked newish with visible clean branding...bit you never know about the water pump...did a few long journeys...everything seemed pucker...but last month on the way to a family wedding...after only 55 miles I had the flash stop the car F***off warning light...worried I had blown the head gasket...flatbed back to my local garage...not the head gasket...changed thermostat...still over heating...Been able to drive car for short journeys by using the heater on full...next week having both the water pump and cam belt changed...fingers crossed...

My guess is that it will be the water pump impeller - they can corrode away. If the coolant has never been renewed the radiator could be clogged up too. Let us know the outcome please.

Hope you made it to the wedding!

Picked up PUG tonight...town driving OK...then took it for test drive on Motorway...over heated again...red stop light came on and I pulled over...

Water pump was changed...it was missing 4 out of it 6 blade tips...thermostat and cam belt was also replaced...

Mechanic took it for a drive everything seemed ok...

Engine is ok with hot air blowing full blast..

Also car lost power when I let it cool down and tried to pull out in slow inside lane...scary...

Any sugestions?

Mechanic took it for test drive before I picked it up...

I always drive with cold air blowing for 'Me Bitch' Tizzy (Staffy)...This also push the engine temp up...

Did you fit a new radiator? If the impeller was that badly corroded the metal had to go somewhere. It is probably clogging up the core in your radiator. I'd put a new radiator on the car.

I have heard of a fan being wired to run backwards but that caused overheating around town. I don't think that would be your issue. Made interesting reading though.

Took me pug for second opinion who wacked in on their computer...no fault code...so checked out the coolants system...all working ok...apart from to much pressure causing header cap to leak....

So they have advised the following:
Skim head
New Head Set
New Pressure Bolts
Replace Oil and New Filter

Include parts and labour 450ish

Other option is to buy used engine.....

Even thought the cambelt look new...I should have replace it and checked the water pump...to be honest the damage could have already been done before I bought it.....

So a cautionary tale for anyone who has just bought a Pug...no garage document...alway wip out and replace the cam belt and water pump.

I thought you said in your post dated 6th September that you replaced the cam belt.

It all seems to be getting very expensive now with no guarantee that you will be solving the actual problem. In your post dated 1st September you stated that it wasn't the head gasket.

How did the latest garage check the radiator wasn't clogged? Are you using Peugeot specialist garages or not? I personally wouldn't be keen on using a garage that didn't specialize in Peugeots to work on a 206cc. Your choice though Neil - it's your money...
