For what jt's worth, my first car was a 1955 Ford Popular sit-up-and-beg vacuum wipers but great fun. It was 1965 and, yes, I do remember the sixties and fifties. Number two was a Jowett Javelin which I later traded in for a Jowett Jupiter. If only I had them now! fabulous engineering and design, pretty nippy as well. I then owned: Citroen ID (beauty and comfort on wheels) , Triumph Vitesse convertible, three Vauxhall Victors, Standard Vanguard, two Jaguar 3.8 S-Types, VW Golf, Datsun 240Y, Various other run abouts, Citroen C3, and now my new love a 2003 206CC 1.6. I hope this list is of interest and amusement to you all. Happy Days!

My grandad had an E93A. Used to practice gear changes in it on the drive next to the house before I got my provisional licence.

My first car was an Austin A35. We were both the same age - 18. Killed the thing taking the brother-in-law to the local scrapyard and filling it with parts, including a wing for a Vauxhall 101. Older members of the forum will remember those boxes on wheels. Driving home, B-I-L who's in the back, after hearing an ominous loud crack said "Oh f***. I can see the road. The thing had split right across the middle. We got home - just. End of car after 6 weeks.

Next car, and the most fun car I had was a Morris Minor. Bought from same B-I-L for £10 and a swap of a car radio (came out of the A35). He was at work and saw the Morris heading for the local scrapyard when it's suspension went. He offered to pull it to the scrapyard with his work's tractor. Owner handed him the logbook and MOT and told him if he wanted it it was his as he'd got a new car. Turned out it had nearly a year's MOT on it.

As it happened, there was another Morris Minor that had been abandoned on the grass verge and partially cannibalised. We got the suspension off it and repaired the other Morris.

A couple of weeks later, the engine decided to pack in so we replaced it with an engine and gearbox from an A40 that a friend had lying in his garden. Morris Minors are one of the easiest cars ever to work on as the whole front bolts on and off. Only took 4 hours from start to finish to change out the engine and gearbox and that was stopping for a couple of cups of coffee.

That Morris could fly with the bigger engine in it. Clock only went up to 80mph if I remember correctly but taking down the M8 (now M80 in Scotland) and we were passing much more powerful cars. The looks on the other drivers' faces were a picture. Estimate our speeds were between 100 and 110 mph. The thing had no brakes to speak of, the bumper was tied on with string. We always carried spares, namely a spare fan belt, ball of string and numerous elastic bands.

Looking back, the thing was a death-trap but we never came to any harm (a miracle in itself), never knew if we were going to get from A to B without breaking down at least once, but oh, what a fun car it was.

Happy if dangerous days.

I suspect Morris Minors never had any brakes to speak of. I was assigned one at work - it was maybe 6 years old but had only done about 9,000 miles. The workshop swore the brakes were in A1 condition, but it scared me. I refused to drive it any more, and they gave me a Ford Escort instead. Much better.

The brakes were lousy on them. No servos in those days. Emergency stop meant literally standing on the brake. Crossply tyres too which didn't help. Brakes had a nasty habit of leaking too, usually from the slave cylinders as we found out while driving in Dundee, down a steep hill with the traffic lights on red at the end - one of my hairest moments but we survived unscathed.

Apart from the Morris which was the most fun car I had, the best cars I've had so far were:

MkV Cortina Ghia - ex-husband borrowed it and it got written off - not his fault.

Daewoo Musso 3L TDi 4x4 (made by Ssangyong) - had it from new for 14 years. Failed it's MOT on two inner track rod ends. Ssangyong stopped making them but also stopped making the parts for them too so despite scouring the forums and internet for parts, couldn't get them and had to scrap an otherwise perfectly good car. Really loved that car and I stood in the middle of our road howling my head off when the breaker came to take her away

And my little Corsa 1.2 SXi deserves a mention. Reliable little car bought from a local dealer who only sells the occasional car. After the Musso, I hated it but it grew on me. Lots of faults - steering always pulled to the left, carpets were always wet in winter, engine rattled but was still fiesty. Failed it's MOT badly and wasn't worth repairing so scrapped her at the end of August. Now got the 206 CC and hope it'll be a good and fun car. So far, even with a few niggles like the boot deciding not to open (not worried as there's nothing in it - will deal with that later) I hope she's reliable and also fun as I've never had a convertible before :D

No idea - yet but if it doesn't it soon will, at least in time for next spring/summer :)

More important to me is how warm the car will be in winter as I'm a hothouse plant and don't think I'll have any worries on that score. Heater on the car is brilliant. Had to turn it down today. Also, compared to the Corsa, the heater warms up really quickly - a big plus for me :big-grin:

I'd test the roof .. and then while you are getting the boot lifting-struts replaced, you can get the garage to sort the roof if it plays up! (I read you other post about the lock!)

I'm not in too much of a hurry - will need to save up for the repairs as I'm on a limited income. Car was cheap so I knew there'd be some repairs to do but overall I'm really happy with her so far :D If the weather holds up tomorrow will try the roof and hope it works. Fingers crossed it works.

My first car was a Morris Ital in pageant blue. A 1.3L. One of Leylands finest. I suspect it started to rust before it even left the factory. Spent many happy summers filling it with fibreglass and bodge. It lasted me for about 10 years then passed it onto my brother in law for free. He sold it to a stock car racer. I bet he had a suprise the first time he hit anything!! :D
