EGR Blanking

Post by Kirisute »

Yesterday i decided to try out blanking off my EGR.
cut myself a plate out of a red bull can and fitted it with no hassle at all! 10 min job!

Car was running ok but it felt sluggish/ like a flat spot at top 2000 early 3000 revs....id checked plugs, air filter etc
so figured id give blanking the EGR a try.

After a quick "italian tune up" yesterday and a couple of spins around this morning things seem to be a bit smoother.
acceleration seems a bit crisper..flat spots seem gone/alot less.
all temps are running exactly where they were prior to the blanking.
Ill test for a couple of weeks and report back how it goes.
cars an 05 2l allure so its nice to feel the acceleration being a bit crisper!

EGR is good for the emissions but bad for the engine (more so with diesels) Hate the flippin things.

yeah had endless issues with my 2000 Astra and my pug 407 priot to this 206.
the astra i fitted a new EGR; the 407 i cleaned the egr with carb cleaner and this one i thought id try blanking!

not gonna cause any harm to see how she runs with it blanked and an easy removal if the emissions creep a bit high for the MOT.

MOT only test for CO & HC but not NOx, so won't be a fail

thumbs up all round so far then! LOL

Spoke too soon! Lol
Threw an anti pollution fault on the way home!
Removed blanking plate and cleaned egr.
Hopefully the fault will auto clear after a few hours.

off to garage to get codes read and removed.
hopefully it will just know the EGR is back online properly and the fault will be sorted!
interestingly enough the experiment has certainly told me the EGR is either clogged up badly or on its way out! so a replacement will be due im thinking.

Did you leave it connected electronically while blanked?
Cheers Col.

Yeah, let the engine cool for an hour prior to blanking, and left the egr connected.
Garage reckons the ecu needs programming to take off the egr. Even if it's just blanked.

Code was an "exhaust gas" configuration error, had it cleared and done a 40 mile trip with no warning lights etc.

Might just hunt down a new egr; not sure how much reprogramming the ecu would be in order to blank or take off the egr without an error.
