High consumption 13.5l/100km

Post by MartinMax »

Hi All,

I'm having a relatively high fuel consumption 13.5l/100km (~21.7Mpg) on a 2001 2.0i

The car seems to run well, ~7-800 rpm idle, power is there (acceleration and max speed)
but the consumption is geting me worried, especially with the increase in petrol prices.

I've had the car 1+ year now but only recently I tought about checking the consumption.
My model has no trip computer so I calculated based on km passed vs petrol refueled.

Anyone that can share average consumption for a 2.0i 206cc?

Also I havent noticed any change in performance during the last year, so if there is an issue it is not something new :-).

Best, Martin

Depends how you drive it .. :-)

And how you calculated the fuel use. I fill it to the brim, drive and then refill it using the same pump if I can.

I would have said high 20s/low 30s (mpg) would have been closer.

Temperature sender can cause the ecu to think the car is running cold and richen the mixture.

Also plugs, etc

Hi Gazza82,

that is how I calculated, full fill-up, drive 3/4 of the tank (never let it go below 1/4) and refill.
it varies from drive to drive, but average from 3-4 fill-ups is 13.5l/100km.

As for driving style, mostly urban driving, without pushing it before the engine warms-up. But once it gets warm (~80 degC) I drive it harder...

Not sure when the plugs were changed, I did not do that, so might be their time. Last year (@153K km) I did the C service, but the dealership did not mention anything about spark plugs.

Is there any way to check that, without removing the ignition coils and the plugs?

I never managed to get my daughter to check her mpg ... she would either never fill it or forget to note the mileage. Urban driving won't give you the best though.

I fitted Bosch Super 4 plugs to her 2.0 and it was far more responsive ... and no you can't tell without removing them. Because of where they are I would not be surprised if a garage 'forgot' to change them. Which is why I service my own cars when outside the warranty.

I checked with an OBDII reader and found a strange thing:

Could I be missing a catalyst or a sensor?

P.S. I would love to service my own car, at least the basic stuff, but I live in an apartment without a garage, so no possibility to do that. Waiting for someone to open a self service garage in Skopje :-)

I get about 30-31mpg on mine under urban & motorway conditions,
Don't use it that often and don't drive like a mad man nowadays :big-grin:

Hmmm, that's the sort of thing for which I wouldn't trust a generic tool. You really need to see what Peugeot Planet makes of it.

2001 is before/on the EOBD switch/standardisation so no a generic OBDII reader will give you some very odd results.

At this point, I'm really thinking about purchasing PP2000, it's ~3-40 EUR on ebay...

Well worth it.

Tips:

Install into a 32-bit Windows system, If you only have a 64-bit system, either install a 32-bit as a dual boot, or as a virtual machine. But the best solution is an old 32-bit Win XP computer which is likely to have a non-widescreen display, better suited to Planet.

When installing, do not plug the interface into the USB port until prompted, or the drivers will not install correctly.

If offered the opportunity to update online, refuse. It will not work, and the software is hacked, and will need to be re-installed if an attempt to update online is made.

Sealey made a PSA specific code reader .. but sadly it is now discontinued.

I have one but I still have a 206 hatch and it also works on son's Clio so it remains here .... you might find one on fleabay

I'm probably going to order one from ebay…

Even if everything is OK with the car, should be a nice toy to play with.
I checked one offer and it says:
V7.83 Full Chip USB Diagnostic Tool For Citroen Peugeot Lexia 3 PP2000 Diagbox.
Should I purchase the S.1279 module also?

No idea what that is. Can you post a link to the item?

Hi, yes there are two that I'm considering:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/PP2000-Full-Ch ... %7Ciid%3A1

and this one has the optional module:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/V7-83-Full-Chi ... %7Ciid%3A1

The price for both is roughly the same, but I dont want to wait 1+ months for delivery just to find out it's the wrong item :-)

I do worry when you see "turn of anti-virus or it will delete the .exe file" .. probably goes into meltdown like my copy from AliExpress did ..
