Track Control Arm

Post by Luditus »

Vehicle : 2002 1.6 16v Auto
Story line : Passed MOT. 1 advisory - N/S Track control arm. Got that replaced. Car handles like a pig. Laid car up for snow/rain season. Had 4 wheel alignment carried out. Car now lethal to drive. So sad because it was brilliant before the MOT.
Thinking cap on : New track control arm probably made in back streets of Shanghai.
Decision : Get both arms replaced by quality manufactured parts. TRW coming to mind.
Research : Part number for TRW arms changes for automatic vehicle, according to web site, but no change is mentioned on the Eurocarparts site.
Question : Any suggestions as to why the automatic has a different arm, and what might the difference be?

Bit of a mystery. There is no distinction for this part between auto and manual in the Peugeot Service Box Documentation (illustrated parts catalogue).

Only difference I know of is the GTi arms that go on the 2.0 CCs have a steel bush rather than two rubber ones on the smaller engined versions.

The cheaper ones can't take the weight and bushes split quickly.

The alignment is the same.

Thanks for your replies.
I knew TRW as Cam Gears, and their test facilities were excellent, which is the main reason for them being my first choice. GTi arms would be a good upgrade, however, as I no longer do my own maintenance ( got lazy in my old age ), I try to keep things simple for the spanner monkeys. The car drove straight with the old arm, which had the integral moulded bushes, so logically standard replacements ought to be capable of performing the same. Diving into a ditch when foot off at 100 is not much fun! :o

From the very detailed photographs of these components on the ZF website, it appears that the automatic always utilises the "spongy" rear rubber. I can't think of any reason not to have them the same as the manual version - which seems a stiffer design.

Pretty sure the stiffer jointed arm will be ok and possibly better for handling. Although that might mean a pair.

Always read TRW is a better brand than others. I used TRW arms on my Alfa for many years and they tended to last longer.

Update : Had difficulty locating a matching pair of Lemforder or TRW automatic arms. Found some Febi Bilsteins from Mr Auto, complete with all fittings, and an irresistible price including airfreight from Lyon. Had them fitted today, and now drives perfectly. Result! :)
