Possible fire, advice needed

Post by Sasthesprite »

Hi, I have a 206cc Peugeot and the engine cover has detached and slipped down the back of the engine. I noticed while it was on charge and black smoke came out. I have removed the engine cover which was well melted and charred. I'm now worried about starting it again in case it catches fire. Will this happen? Do you know what it may have been sat on to melt? I think it could of been exhaust or manifold but am worried invade there are any electrics or petrol lines down there. Thanks

I suppose you are worried that some of the plastic detached from the cover and is stuck to something that will get hot, but you can't see anything.

You could start the engine with the bonnet raised, and monitor for fumes of hot plastic, If you do smell that, switch off. If not, assume all the plastic stayed with the cover.

Just as a precaution, I would suggest having a CO2 extinguisher handy.

It did exactly that before so I switched off. I just wondered if anyone knew what was behind the engine?
I need to move it as moving house and need to get it to the garage.
If it smokes when started, will it burn off or catch fire?
Thanks

What behind the engine depends on which engine you have.

1.6 petrol, 1.6 diesel or 2.0 petrol?
