Leak caused by heavy rain

Post by Minirailz »

Hello,

Yesterday and also today a lot of rain has been falling down.

I noticed some drops inside on the backseat, right under the joint of the 2 roof pieces.
(not the hooks)
It has happened before, but I greased the roof and until now that worked fine.

Any other tips?
Since just greasing doesn't seem to do (the full) trick...

Dennis

What type of grease did you use? Silicone grease works really well.

I use Bardahl universal grease.
Advertising that it should work for anything (especially doors etc.)
Based on lithium, not silicone though...

Should I try silicone instead?

Thanks for the quick reply!

That is more for reducing friction. I use more solid silicon grease that comes in a tub. Obtain it from your local plumbers merchants.

If you don't want to buy a tub you can get a small tube instead.

but it is more economical to buy a tub

Hi, I'm also now getting this problem (its my first winter with my pug)
can I ask where are you applying the silicon grease? I've read that the rubber seals over the door are hollow and that if you seal this hollow with silicon this should fix the issue?
but I thought i'd check with someone wbo might know first?

Thanks.

I just apply grease along the seals across the car. The front seal at the windscreen joint is easy, I just put the roof down to get at that. The seal at the hinge in the roof is more scary. With the engine running I open the roof about halfway so that I can get at the seal, let go of the roof switch, and apply the grease, but quickly - just a few seconds, then operate the roof switch the same way (don't reverse the action mid-cycle) so that the roof fully opens. (It tells you in the owners handbook not to leave it stopped mid-cycle for any length of time.) When you've fully opened the roof and heard the bong you can close the roof again. What you must NOT do is switch off the ignition with the roof mid-cycle - that's one reason why I leave the engine running, so I don't forget.

The rubber seals over the door only need a smear of grease where they join in my experience.

I have no idea whether the stuff you have will do the trick, I had never heard of it, but have since googled it. I suppose it has to be worth a try if you have it. It appears to me to be more for rubber door seals which can stick when they begin to perish. The stuff I use has more the consistency of Vaseline, but is silicon, not petroleum jelly. If there are any small gaps in the seals above the door it can fill them whereas thinner stuff won't do that.

Let us know how you get on.

Thank you for your time, I applied rubber care stick just now to the front and back roof fold (following your advise with leaving the engine running, open the roof half way, be quick and continue in its original direction) and all went well but I agree I don't think what i have got will do the trick.
So I have purchased a tube of the silicon grease and will let you know how i get on.

Thanks again! :)

Well done so far - at least you've tried it and the roof is still working!

I use a spamspam (cuisine) roll wipe/tissue to rub the silicon in. Less messy than using your fingers. Oh, and keep the stuff away from your eyes - silicon does them no good. So if you do get it on your hands wash your hands before touching your face.

Ok so I'm still getting wet, how much grease should I be using? And would it work if I applie it to the outside of seal aswell (without opening the roof)?
Otherwise I'm thinking of buying a cover for overnight at least?
