oil leak

Post by Lpoolboy26 »

Hi guys
After garage messed up cam belt change, car would not go over 20 miles per hour with bad tapping sound, turns out they broke the rocker and injectors ?? So I paid £1500 to a new garage to put right but now I'm leaking oil from the front underneath I think the drivers side. Its not affecting the oil levels as only small but its leaving patches after a couple of aye on the drive. Cars running fine, but want to sell it and don't want it leaking oil when I do. Its a 2006 1.6 Hdi allure.
Any ideas ? Also front fog lights not working , changed bulbs and fuse but new fuse keeps blowing. ...I know nothing of cars, last year had turbo replaced at cost of almost £2000, so hoping its not gonna cost much more. Please any help welcome
My 206cc is like Whitney Houston,...Beautiful, smooth, classy and most of all it sounds fantastic !!!...oh and I'm guessing if I'm on here posting I should say the cars died too !!! (Tastless I know....sorry)

I take it you have not been using Peugeot specialist garages? If you know nothing about cars why not take it to your local Peugeot specialist - you should get proper advice there - and get it repaired properly. The only time ours sees a non-specialist garage is for its MOT test.

That's a bit harsh.
A lot of people don't go to Peugeot specialists are they don't have any close by or for financial reasons. Independent specialists are normally run by ex-marque technicians and charge somewhere between non-specialists and dealer prices.

As for me, non of my cars have been to a main dealer or specialists for at least 10 years as I know a good chap I trust who has many years experience on a wide range of cars. I trust him with my Pug, just as much as I trust him with my Mercedes or Volvo.

LpoolBoy26: Try to get under the car and work out where the oil leak is coming from, that will help people with a diagnosis.

To be fair Ron, a main dealer service / repair is only as good as the guy doing the work.
You could be paying dealer prices and only have the apprentice work on your car.
A good one man band only has his reputation to stand on, whereas a main dealers word is taken as *gospel*- however wrong or right.
I could tell you main dealer stories that would make your hair stand on end
How many times have we read on here about someone with a (roof usually) problem that the main dealer has not been able to sort out? Also bear in mind theses cars have been out of production for a number of years now, and the guys that were originally trained on them may have now left the Peugeot dealerships for pastures new.
I think the moral of the story is, if you find a good garage that you are happy with (main dealer or not) then stick with them.
Cheers Col.

As the second garage have been helpful I would suggest asking them if they would be prepared to document their findings, then present that documentation and a claim (via the Small Claims Court) to the place that c@cked it up first time round.

Whenever there is a job that I don't fancy doing on our 206cc then it goes to my local independent Peugeot specialist in Oadby. They know Peugeots inside out and therefore will do the job properly, efficiently and at a reasonable price. L26 has already had his fingers badly burnt at one garage, and the other has left the car with an oil leak. L26 says he knows nothing about cars and so I doubt that he'll have any tools either. Ed, I wasn't meaning to be harsh and apologise if that's how I came across. I am a realist and a pragmatist and that is where I was coming from. Ed, you are considering a diesel. Why not make L26 an offer, then sort out the oil leak and fog lamps. It would probably do you both a good turn? I am loath to resort to the courts as the only ones that make money from that are the lawyers.

I've said my piece now. I am only offering the same way forward as I would any of my friends or family. It is not said in any way as criticism, just as a constructive way forward.

I respect all of your opinions by the way. They will hopefully help L26 in his decision making.

I would have made an offer but I'm not confident to go for a car I know has had a major problem. A little oil leak doesn't cause me any concern but reading that the cambelt replacement job went wrong and it would knocking badly is enough to put me off.

Out of interest Lpoolboy26, what sort of price are you looking to sell it for, I may be interested, it's a long way from me though.
