Another my car wont start thread - SOLVED -

Hi All
Lurked around here occassionaly in the past but never had anything to offer or trouble.
Oh how thats changed.

My wifes 2004 build 206cc 1.6 (tu5jp4 engine)

Had hot starting problems.
Battery 4 and a half years old.
CCA half ogf what they should be replaced with new battery.

Problem reappeared

Saw the thread on here regarding the starter motor.
Took it out and tested out of the car to double check part number.
Put back in car and she started.
turned off and started again ok
tried again and click click
Took starter out again.
Tested it out of the car and motor turned when connected across the battery.

Put back in car, click click.
also whining noise from around the throttle assembly/air intake.
took out fuse 8 from the fusebox besides battery.
20 amp Fan Unit Relay - Engine Control Unit - Engine management unit solenoid valve.
Noise stopped
Replaced Fuse - noise returned.
Car now in economy mode (battery voltage measures OK)

Tried to jump start from my car
starter click clicks
but whining noise from throttle assembly gone.

disconected jump leads
when trying to start whining noise from throttle assembly returned.

Lights and central locking working in economy mode but not the wipers.

Im thinking perhaps the cold cranking amps are down on the battery with all the testing.
and this is causing the economy mode and perhaps the starter is still at fault despite testing ok out of the car.

Im in Western Australia and its red hot so the hot start starter motor problem seems the most logical cause.

Sorry for the long first post and any advice gratefully received.

Hi and welcome. It does sound like a starter problem, but just check battery and earth connections first. Wipers is one item that is disabled when economy mode is active. They will be OK once you have engine running.

Do you think economy mode kicked in and the whining from the throttle assembly are due to the battery being discharged through trying to start the car and testing the starter motor outside the car?




The battery reads 12.7 volts on my multimeter which suggests its charged.
Will get my Ctek charger from my mate and recharge it anyway.

Forgot to ask, is it possible for the starter motor to spin up ok out of the car, but not under load ie in the car

My money would be on the starter motor - replace it with a new one.

Have ordered a new starter from the uk.
Even with postage its half the price of a local one. Which they would most likely get interstate.

Hi Guys

Just to let you know as you suspected it was the starter motor.
Arrived from the UK today, fitted it and car started first time.
Economy mode gone from dash and all electrical systems working.

I was quite lucky really as I had no idea about the battery disconnection/bsi procedure.
Got away with it though.

P.s can you tell me what the uk service schedule is for replacing the timing belt on this car. Tu5jp4 engine 1.6l 16valve.
Also is the haynes manual worthwhile. I notice that it doesnt cover this engine.

I find the Haynes manual useful for most things even though it doesn't cover the engine. For the sake of £16 it is worth having in my opinion.

As for the timing belt I understand that for the 1.6 litre petrol it is 100,000 miles or 10 years (whichever comes first) in the UK. However I know that others recommend 80,000 miles or 8 years max for both engines although strictly speaking I think that the lower figures should relate to the 2.0 litre engine. I'd make sure that idler and tensioner pulleys are replaced together with the water pump at the same time.

Hi All,

gota 206cc 05 plate 1.6 quiksilver, had a faulty starter motor, which has been replaced,now 2 weeks later car wont start says economy mode active.

Parked it in drive on Friday night, went to start it on Saturday morning and economy mode active message displayed, heaters, wipers, radio won't work only windows and remote central locking, wont even tick over.

Tried bsi reset, battery discount and reconnect but no luck, all levels ok.

Any help for you guys would be much greatful

Economy mode means the battery is a bit flat, so to preserve the remaining power, car goes into economy mode.
This switches off unnecessary items such as radio wipers etc:
Economy mode will disappear once engine is running and alternator is charging battery.

Now when you say it won't start. Exactly what do you mean? Is the engine cranking, and at normal speed?
How old is the battery?

Battery is about 5 months old, checked battery and is good
Car wont start, engine will not crank at all, nothing when i turn the key

When car was up and running never had any issues with speed or power

In that case I would check connections on new starter are tight, if they are OK it sounds like new starter is faulty. Where did starter come from? Did you fit it?

Starter motor was a used one

Ah! I would put a new one on.
Those Peugeot starters weren't the most reliable. That, coupled with the fiddly nature of changing the starter, I personally would never fit secondhand- It's a false economy.

I have trouble with my 206 (V reg) - starting when cold but becoming a pain after a short journey - 3 - 10 miles, when it won't restart for 5 - 10 minutes ( a strong fuel smell sometimes) I have stuck to the manual's advice and always unlock the steering wheel to ease the ignition process but I'm beginning to feel like John Cleese now and want to thrash the beast. Any suggestions?

I suggest you tell us a bit more about it, like what engine? mileage etc:
(Basically what's in red at the bottom of all my posts)
You don't even tell us if it's petrol or diesel as it obviously isn't a 206CC at that year
