Tyre sizes and clearance

Post by batso »

Time to find some new tyres, and I've noticed that the standard 205/45 r16 is a bit of an oddball size.

Is it viable to expand the selection to include 205/50 r16 or even 205/55 r16, without rubbing or fouling springs or wheel arch liners?

They do tend to be more expensive ..

My Alfa 156 had 205/55/R16s and they were always a lot cheaper than the CCs 45 profiles. And more choice.

£40 to £50 quid is fine for me. Let me have a look..
The 55 is indeed cheaper. Raising the car 19mm is not for me.

Update - I've taken the punt.

205/50 r16s fit just fine.

Speedo error - actually less than it was with the 45s. Speedo now reads dead on.

Appearance - I reckon it looks better with a bit more tyre in the wheel arches

Handling - I've probably lost maybe a half a second if i were to hit the Nurburgring with it, but thats not likely to happen. So no harm no foul.
