bolts holding on other front brake calipers

Post by petethepond »

What is the size or the hex bolts holding on other front brake calipers ?

Its bigger that an 8mm but 10mm wont fit, so i was thinking it may be 9mm but i cannot see a 9mm listed.

Or is it a tork with the fluted hex ?

Probably torx ... there are plenty on the car. You referring to the caliper mounting brackets?

Thanks, Yes i was referring to the caliper mounting brackets.

I am changing the clutch and there is a lot to remove to get at it ?

Not had a good look, just a feel around the back of the caliper mounting brackets and a 8mm Hex bit is a loose fit in the attachment bolt.

i had an Idea it might be a Torx headed bolt, ut the bit sizes are not listed in mm but codes i.e T50 which is 8.83mm)which is probably the size.

Might order a set, as you suggested i will probably need a selection for around the car.
Also found out there are other drive patterns called spline. similar to Torx but with more flutes ?

There are also bolts with torx heads ... for those you need torx sockets

You don't need to remove calipers to change clutch. Split the bottom ball joint and remove driveshaft. The strut can be tied back to give extra space if needed. I use a small ratchet strap from strut to back wheel. It will pull it backwards and outwards and you only need a couple of inches which is not enough to pull on brake hose or damage anything.
You might find this useful

Many Thanks

I have watched a u tube video and it looked like they stripped everything of the strut and then removed the strut to make room, but your advice will save a lot of work

I think the Video on UTube is of a petrol engine 106 and it's not a CC.

Mine is a Diesel and things look a bit different in the layout and Position.

What should i need to remove to allow enough room to drop the gear box ?

Same info I gave before. You can move gearbox enough to remove clutch assembly without taking it out completely

The video showed that both Drive shafts need to be removed. along with the starter motor.

If the flywheel isn't being removed does the starter motor need to come off.

Does the O/S drive shaft affect the gearbox removal

O/S Drive shaft really needs to be removed. Can be done in situ but risk driveshaft oil seal damage. Starter can stay put, but you will have more room to work with it removed.
