Engine RPM VS Speed

Post by mariusing »

I have just bought a 2001 206cc 2.0L MT , I wonder what should be the normal RPM in 5th gear at 100km/h
I have mine at arround 2800rpm, it sounds a bit high to me, hope someone can post with yours

Thx

I'm sure someone will help sooner, but I'll have the CC on 30th/31st for repairs and can check this then but that does sound about right.

What wheel/tyre sizes do you have on the car?

2.0 should be 16" rims with 205/45R16 tyres .. but some did get 15" rims.

Fuel consumption is bad. It seems to do about 37mpg on runs 30miles+ but I do a lot of short runs <5miles so less than 34mpg.

So anyone has an idea of such a high RPM?

gazza82 and SAnt have confirmed that their cars are the same as yours so your RPM is correct. I have owned Peugeot petrol engined cars since 1979 and all of them have been comparatively high revving. They are designed that way.

Perhaps you are used to driving diesels which rev lower?

Servicing wouldn't affect the engine speed v road speed. A slipping clutch would but yours sounds normal. You'll recognise a slipping clutch - sky high revs on hard acceleration but getting nowhere fast - and a pungent burning smell. Relax.

Service the car once every 12 months or 10,000 miles (whichever comes sooner) and you won't go far wrong. Peugeot say every 2 years or 20,000 miles but I would never leave it that long. New oil is cheaper than a new engine!
