tyre size

Post by grbe »

Currently I have 205/45 R16 tyres on my 206cc 2.0.
Can I put 205/55 R16 tyres on it?

Technically you could, but it's not recommended
Main reason being the difference in total circumference would make your speedo wrong

Yes you are right. I made some calculations so speedo will be showing lower speed than true. For example it will show 10 km/h while true speed is 10,7 km/h, 50 km/h while true speed is 53 km/h, around 100km/h this error goes about about 7km/h.

Expensive those 45 profiles aren't they ...

We're paying £90 for Hankook V12 Evo's for the CC but I can get Dunlop Sport Maxx 205/55ZR16s for my Alfa for under £80. Both prices including fitting, balancing, etc. All branded names like Dunlop, Michelin, Pirelli, Goodyear, etc in 205/45R16 all come out way above £100 per tyre.

Avoid fitting incorrect tyres ... if you have an accident and the insurance company discover they are non-standard, they may decide not to pay out ... as they class it as an undeclared mod or even it's non-standard and therefore unsafe! They even check the load ratings now ... they try and find anything to avoid hurting their profits.

Plus as grbe says it throw out your speedo and also the odometer (mileage) but that could work out to be a good thing is it's recording less that it's actually doing (but that might be construed as fraud! :? )

Would the larger size rub as i have just taken some 205/55/16 snow tyres to be fitted by National tyres and they have refused to fit them as they may rub.
Thanks.

You may need to inform your insurance co, as a non std size is considered a mod.
The sidewall is about 20mm higher, so probably would rub. I've not tried it myself though
Cheers Col.
