WARNING: DESIGN FLAW OF AUTO TRANSMISSION GATE

Post by 52nd of February »

Just a heads-up for any of you out there with an auto gearbox - that open gate allows hair, dust (even thistle seeds in my case!) to fall in and block the sensors. This causes an irratic gearbox which likes to skip gears, rev high, lag between changes and make loud and violent clunking noises which in turn causes the car to lurch forward and spin its wheels at the most dangerous and inconvenient of times. It's worse in the tiptronic models (automatics from 2004 and onwards) because of the extended gate for the manual section, and the tiptronic sensors that are under there.

The solution is regular vacuuming of the gate with a small, thin rectangular nozzle, and if you have a tiptronic car, put it in manual mode regularly and give the lever and sensors a workout :)

All those with manual gearboxes are in the clear, the boot stops this from happening to you
