Hi all,

Just been to look at some 206 cc's today. What is the difference in the spec of the s, se and allure?? Which is the best one to go for? And how much difference is there between the 1.6 and the 2.0?

We decided to go for the 1.6 Allure. Not particularly fast but will cruise at illegal speeds, is ultra reliable, and returns 40+ mpg. Insurance is cheaper too.
No doubt the 2 litre is quicker, but thirstier too, and seems to have had more problems with hydraulic tappets and exploding manifolds.
The Allure has leather, aircon (climate control from late 2005 on), alloys, colour coded bumpers.
We've been well satisfied with ours.
Make sure you try any car out thoroughly before you buy. Try to work out why the owner has decided to sell. Has he/she been experiencing faults with the car? Is it due an expensive service? Are the tyres, brakes, exhaust in need of replacement. DOES THE ROOF WORK PERFECTLY? DOES IT LEAK?
I would say buy as new as you can afford, ensure that you know its service history, and take someone with you who knows about cars, and, if possible, about 206cc's in particular. Read the owner's manual front to back before you use it (most problems, particularly with the roof, are self-inflicted by not reading the instructions thoroughly, and they can be expensive to fix when you go wrong). Make sure the jack, wheel brace, and locking wheel nut key is with the car (and that it fits the locking wheel nuts on the car), make sure you get both ignition keys, and if the owner has a wind-stop (wind-deflector) persuade them to include it with the car.
If you go for the 2.0 litre make sure that it runs perfectly from cold. CARE! If it doesn't you may find that the owner has run it to warm it up before you arrive. You will then only find out that it doesn't run properly from cold when you start it the following day having paid for it, and find that you'll have a bill of £800 to sort out the dreaded tappet problem!
